Lehua and Ōhiʻa
Hookahi no mea aloha…o ke aloha.
Once there was a handsome Hawaiian chief named Ōhiʻa who was in love with a beautiful maiden named Lehua. One day, Pele the volcano goddess, saw Ohina and wanted him for herself. Approaching him, Pele said, “I Am the goddess Pele and I want you for my husband.” “I cannot marry you,” Ōhiʻa said, “For I have already given my heart to Lehua.” Pele was furious. “How dare you defy me!” she cried. “If I can’t have you then no one will!” She then cast a spell and turned Ōhiʻa into a twisted tree.
When Lehua saw what Pele had done, she begged her to change him back, but Pele ignored her and left in a fury. At the base of the tree, Lehua sobbed, “How can I live without Ōhiʻa? I would give my life to change him back.” When the other gods heard Lehua, they took pity on her but Pele’s magic was too powerful to change him back. The gods then cast a spell that changed Lehua into a beautiful red flower on the Ōhiʻa tree. Ōhiʻa and Lehua would be joined together forever and Pele could never separate them again.
That is why it is believed that whenever anyone picks a Lehua blossom, it will rain because the lovers have been separated.

ʻIliahi, also known as Hawaiian Sandalwood, originates exclusively from the Santalum Paniculatum species, endemic to Hawaii Island (the Big Island) and found nowhere else globally. The Hawaiian archipelago boasts six distinct sandalwood species, comprising a significant portion of the genus’ biodiversity. Santalum trees yield santalols, potent compounds responsible for the wood’s distinctive fragrance and medicinal attributes.
Historically, sandalwood constituted the inaugural major export of the Islands. This trade, spanning a mere three decades, exerted swift and profound impacts on both the local forests and communities of Hawai‘i. During the period of Western contact, Hawaiian ali‘i (chiefs) engaged in warfare, with Kamehameha I emerging as a dominant figure by establishing a sandalwood monopoly. The abundant natural resources facilitated his acquisition of ships, cannons, and firearms.
Today, a reforestation initiative on the slopes of Mauna Loa is rejuvenating ʻIliahi, once a rare Native Hawaiian tree, with thousands of saplings being reintroduced. Hawaiian Building Supply aims to spotlight this invaluable resource and its heritage through QPC ʻIliahi Flooring, bringing awareness and appreciation to this cherished native plant on a global scale.

Mark Hee is a Native Hawaiian woods expert with over 20 years of experience in exotic wood manufacturing. He and his partners were born and raised in Hawaii and were graduates of Kamehameha Schools. They seek to preserve and promote raw Native Hawaiian materials through modern building innovations.
